Naxos Town, or Chora, on the island's west side, stands in the core of a natural amphitheatric site:The Kastro: old Venetian castle with narrow winding lanes and old stone houses. The most recognizable landmark of Naxos Town (Main Town) is the Portara, an iconic 6th century BC marble gate on the islet of Palatia in Naxos harbor. It is the only remnant of a temple dedicated to Apollo.
The landscape of the island has many rotations. Plains succeed barren areas, marble mountains lead in deep shadowed glens,
areas with vegetation host more then 15 all white villages (Filoti, Apiranthos, has interesting museum) and sandy beaches meet the sea.

Archaeological highlights include the Kouros of Melanes and Apollonas, Dimitra's Temple at Sangri and the Cheimarros Tower.
